Measurement is one of the most important things for civil engineering and without measurements, we can not complete any construction perfectly. Here I have listed some important basic measurements and conversion factors which are most important and commonly used in civil engineering. Hope it will help you lots. lets start without wasting time.

Basic Quantities And its Units

Quantity SI Unit FPS Unit CGS Unit Dimension
Mass Kg pound gram M
Length M Ft. cm L
Time Sec. Sec. Sec T

Metric Unit for Weight/Mass:

In the Metric system of measurements following mass units are used:
gram, kilogram and tonne(t).

1) 1kg = 1000gm
2) 1 tonne = 1,000,000 grams =1000 kilograms
3) 100,000 grams = 100 kilograms = 1 quintal
4) 1 Slug = 32.2 lb
5) 1 Slug = 14.606 kg

Metric Unit for length

Basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter. In the metric system, the most common units of length are millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers.

1) 1meter = 100 centimeter
2) 1centimeter = 10millimeter
3) 1 kilometer = 1000meter
4) 1 kilometer = 1093.61Yard
5) 1 kilometer = 3280.84 foot
6) 1 kilometer = 39370.08 Inch
7) 1 foot = 12 inches.

8) 1 yard = 3 feet.

Metric Units For Liquid:

The liter (L) is the basic metric unit which is used for measuring liquid volume. A milliliter (mL) is the metric unit used to measure liquid in small containers.

1) 1 liter = 1kg
2) 1 kiloliter (1000 liters)= 1 cubic meter/ 1 m3
3)1 liter = 1000mililiter

Conversion Factors:

1) 1 cu. ft. = 28.317 liters
2) 1 cu. ft. = 6.24 galls (imperial)
3) 1 cu. ft. = 0.028 cu. meters
4) 1 cu. ft. = 7.48 galls (US)

Measurements Of Area:

1) 1 Acre = 43560 sq. ft
2) 1 Acre = 4046.46 sq. m
3) 1 Acre = 8 Kanals.
4) 1 Kanal = 20 Marlas.
5) 1 Marla = 15.50 sq.m
